Come Learn About Rutherford Players!
Join us Wednesday, October 21 at 6pm for our Rutherford Players Youth Concert Band Interest Meeting
We’re getting ready to launch Rutherford Players, and we’d love for your family to come be part of the beginning! Our interest meeting is an opportunity to meet our conductor, learn how the program will work, ask questions, try out different instruments, and get a feel for what being part of Rutherford Players will be like.
Whether your young musician is already excited and ready to join, is exploring which instrument might be right for them, or your family simply wants to learn more, this is the perfect opportunity to get all the information you need in a relaxed, no-pressure setting.
We think we’re building something truly special for young musicians in our community, and we’d love for you to be there on the ground floor as it gets started.

Youth Concert Band
Whether you’re just beginning your musical journey or already have experience on your instrument, Rutherford Players offers a welcoming place to learn, grow, and become part of a musical community.
Who This Ensemble Is For
Rutherford Players is designed for young musicians who play, or are interested in learning, traditional concert band instruments and want the opportunity to make music as part of a larger ensemble.
The group welcomes developing musicians, including students who are new to their instrument as well as those with previous school band or ensemble experience.
Rutherford Players is a great fit for:
- Young people interested in learning a concert band instrument.
- Young musicians looking for more opportunities to play with others.
- Students who want to strengthen their skills outside of their school music program.
- Homeschool students and others who may not otherwise have access to a concert band.
- Young musicians looking for a fun, encouraging musical community.
What You’ll Experience
Weekly rehearsals will combine the experience of playing as a full concert band with opportunities for more focused instruction and musical development. Musicians with different backgrounds and experience levels will learn alongside one another, creating an ensemble where players can grow individually while also learning from and encouraging their fellow musicians.
Throughout the program, sectionals and small-group instruction will give musicians opportunities to work more closely on their instruments, individual parts, and the specific skills needed within each section of the band.
Along the way, musicians will:
- Develop ensemble skills such as listening, balance, blend, and playing together.
- Strengthen music reading, rhythm, technique, and overall musicianship.
- Receive focused instruction through sectionals and small-group rehearsals.
- Learn how to follow a conductor and understand their role within an ensemble.
- Learn alongside musicians with a range of experience, with opportunities for collaboration, leadership, and peer mentorship.
- Build confidence playing their instrument as part of a larger group.
- Explore a variety of concert band music and musical styles.
- Prepare music to share at Daggerhart Music Academy performances and events throughout our community.
Most importantly, Rutherford Players is a place to play music together. We want young musicians to experience both the personal growth that comes from developing their own skills and the excitement of hearing musicians with different strengths and experiences come together as one ensemble.
Meet Your Conductor
Rutherford Players is directed by Cornelius Logan, an experienced music educator, multi-instrumentalist, and ensemble director. A Music Education graduate of Appalachian State University, Cornelius has been teaching and guiding ensembles since 2000, including four years as Director of Bands at North Mecklenburg High School.
Cornelius remains an active performer throughout our region, including with the Broad River Community Band, the Symphony of Rutherford County, and the Gardner-Webb Community Orchestra. His combination of music education, concert band experience, and active musicianship makes him an exciting fit to lead Rutherford Players as we build this new ensemble for young musicians in our community.
