Rock Ensemble Lab

Rock Ensemble Lab | Daggerhart Music

A hands-on ensemble experience for musicians

Rock Ensemble Lab is a focused summer experience for musicians who want to step into the role of a working band. Over the course of one week, participants will rehearse together, build stronger ensemble skills, and prepare for a live performance.

This lab is designed to give students a real taste of what it feels like to make music collaboratively. Instead of working only as solo players, participants will learn how to listen, respond, rehearse, and grow as part of a group.

With a small group setting and daily rehearsal time, Rock Ensemble Lab offers space for both musical growth and increased confidence on stage.

What This Lab Is

In this lab, participants will form a small band and work together to learn and perform a set of songs over the course of the week.

Each group will rehearse daily, develop tighter ensemble playing, and work toward a final live performance. The goal is not only to learn songs, but to experience the process of preparing music as a group and presenting it with confidence.

Rock Ensemble Lab combines practical rehearsal experience with guided coaching in musicianship, communication, and stage presence.

What Students Will Work On

  • Learning and performing 3 selected songs
  • Playing as part of a group
  • Listening and locking in with other musicians
  • Stage presence and confidence
  • Basic microphone technique
  • Rehearsal discipline and communication

Who This Is For

  • Ages 12 to 17
  • At least 2 years of experience on an instrument
  • Comfortable playing with others, or ready to learn
  • Interested in performing live

Groups will be formed based on age, experience level, and instrument needs to help ensure a strong fit. Participants should list all instruments they are comfortable playing when registering, as this helps with group placement. Vocalists are encouraged to apply, and a balance of instruments and roles will be considered when forming each group.

Instruments and Roles

Rock Ensemble Lab is built around a typical band setup. Groups will be formed to include a mix of instruments such as guitar, bass, drums, keys, and vocals.

We also welcome musicians who play instruments outside of a traditional band setting, including woodwinds, brass, and strings. These instruments can bring unique character and creativity to the group.

When registering, participants should list their primary instrument as well as any additional instruments they are comfortable playing. Flexibility can help create stronger, more balanced groups.

Vocalists are encouraged to apply, and students who sing while also playing an instrument are especially welcome.

Group Size

Group size is intentionally kept small to allow for strong collaboration and individual attention.

Groups will usually be around 5 participants, though final size may vary slightly depending on instrument balance and group needs.

Our goal is to build well-rounded ensembles rather than simply fill spots, so final group composition will be based on creating the best overall musical experience for everyone involved.
