Write, develop, and record your own music
Creators Lab is a focused summer experience for musicians who are ready to explore original music in a deeper way. Over the course of one week, participants will develop ideas, learn more about how music is shaped, and work toward creating a finished original piece.
This lab is designed for students who want to move beyond simply playing existing music and begin engaging with the creative process for themselves. It offers a supportive environment for experimentation, structure, and artistic growth.
Through guided discussion, practical exercises, and exposure to different creative approaches, participants will gain tools that can help them continue writing long after the week is over.

What This Lab Is
Creators Lab is designed for musicians who are ready to begin writing and developing their own original music.
Participants will explore how songs and instrumental pieces are built, develop their own ideas, and bring a piece from concept to a recorded version. The focus is on both creativity and craft, helping students understand not just what they are making, but how to shape it more intentionally.
This lab gives young musicians the chance to hear their ideas come to life in a concrete way through the recording process.
What Students Will Work On
- Musical form and structure
- Creating motifs, themes, and hooks
- Developing original ideas into full pieces
- Understanding how other musicians approach writing
- Preparing for recording
- Basic recording session experience
Guest sessions with local composers will be a key part of the experience. Participants will hear directly from working musicians about how they approach writing, developing ideas, and bringing music to life.
These sessions will include perspectives from both contemporary songwriting and classical composition. Students will engage with a local songwriter working in a pop and singer-songwriter style, as well as a composer rooted in classical and art music traditions.
This contrast gives participants a broader understanding of how music can be created across different styles, while helping them discover what approaches resonate most with their own creative voice.
